Last week saw two students from Ysgol Bro Gwydir claim victory at the All Wales Coding Competition, which is held annually in Coleg Meirion Dwyfor in Pwllheli. Yr wythnos ddiwethaf bu dau fyfyriwr o Ysgol Bro Gwydir yn llwyddiannus yng Nghystadleuaeth Codio Cymru Gyfan a gynhelir yn flynyddol yng Ngholeg Meirion Dwyfor ym Mhwllheli.

Cai Lloyd Spencer and Oliver Egelstaff-Thomas triumphed in the Unit Category, both taking top prizes in the Highly Commended awards. Bu Cai Lloyd Spencer ac Oliver Egelstaff-Thomas yn llwyddiannus yn y Categori Uned, ac enillodd y ddau ohonynt wobrau yn y categorïau Cymeradwyaeth Uchel.

The victory came about after nine schools across rural Conwy received “Coding training”, a project which was funded through the LEADER programme under the Rural Development Programme for Conwy. Daeth y fuddugoliaeth ar ôl i naw ysgol ar draws Conwy wledig gael “hyfforddiant Codio”, prosiect a ariannwyd trwy raglen LEADER o dan Raglen Datblygu Gwledig Conwy.

The project aimed to establish a network of coding clubs throughout rural Conwy as well as providing young people in with opportunities to develop their coding and computer programming skills, to enable them to compete in an increasingly digital market place. Nod y prosiect oedd sefydlu rhwydwaith o glybiau codio ar draws Conwy wledig yn ogystal â darparu cyfleoedd i bobl ifanc ddatblygu eu sgiliau codio a rhaglennu cyfrifiaduron, i’w galluogi i gystadlu yn y farchnad waith ddigidol.

The project which sees a collaboration between rural Conwy primary schools via the Local Action Group, Conwy County Borough Council and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, to deliver a series of workshops and ongoing support providing opportunities for primary school children to learn how to code. Mae’r prosiect yn golygu cydweithio rhwng ysgolion cynradd gwledig Conwy trwy’r Grŵp Gweithredu Lleol, Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy a Choleg Meirion Dwyfor i gyflwyno cyfres o weithdai a chefnogaeth barhaus gan ddarparu cyfleoedd i blant ysgolion cynradd ddysgu sut i godio.

The project will provide young people in Conwy with opportunities to develop their coding and computer programming skills, to enable them to compete and gain employment in an increasingly digital market place. Bydd y prosiect yn darparu cyfleoedd i bobl ifanc ddatblygu eu sgiliau codio a rhaglennu cyfrifiaduron, i’w galluogi i gystadlu a chael gwaith yn y farchnad waith gynyddol ddigidol.

As part of the project schools received training and Chromebooks. Fel rhan o’r prosiect, derbyniodd ysgolion hyfforddiant a pheiriannau ‘Chromebook’.

Mrs Nest Davies, a teacher at Ysgol Bro Gwydir said, “The whole experience has been amazing, and none of it would have been possible without the training we received through the project”. Dywedodd Mrs Nest Davies, athrawes yn Ysgol Bro Gwydir, “Mae’r holl brofiad wedi bod yn anhygoel, ni fyddai wedi bod yn bosibl heb yr hyfforddiant a gawsom trwy’r prosiect”.

Cai and Oliver both said “We will definitely be aiming for the awards again next year and hope we can be even more competitive”. Dywedodd Cai ac Oliver “Fe fyddwn ni’n sicr yn anelu am y gwobrau eto’r flwyddyn nesaf a gobeithio y gallwn fod hyn yn oed yn fwy cystadleuol”.

Meira Woosnam, Rural Enabling Officer for the Conwy Cynhaliol said, “We are delighted that the Local Action Group here in Conwy have supported a project that has had such a positive impact on the students”. Dywedodd Meira Woosnam Swyddog Galluogi Gwledig ar gyfer Conwy Cynhaliol, “Rydym wrth ein boddau bod y Grŵp Gweithredu Lleol yma yng Nghonwy wedi cefnogi prosiect sydd wedi cael effaith mor gadarnhaol ar y myfyrwyr”.

“We didn’t anticipate the project to be this successful in such a short period of time, with the first schools only receiving their training in December.Ni wnaethom ragweld y byddai’r prosiect mor llwyddiannus â hyn mewn cyfnod mor fyr, gan mai dim ond ym mis Rhagfyr y cafodd yr ysgolion cyntaf eu hyfforddiant. We can’t wait to hear of more children learning to code and hopefully winning some more prizes”. Allwn ni ddim aros i glywed am fwy o blant yn dysgu codio a gobeithio yn ennill mwy o wobrau”.
